Step 1: Know the Location
Familiarize yourself with the location of fire safety equipment in your school or college, including fire extinguishers, fire alarms, fire blankets, and emergency exit routes.
Pay attention to signage indicating the presence of these devices.
Step 2:Understand the Types of Equipment
Learn about the different types of fire safety equipment available and their specific uses.
For example, fire extinguishers are designed to extinguish different types of fires (e.g., Class A, B, C, or D), so it's important to know which type to use in various situations.
Step 3: Follow Instructions and Training
Participate in fire safety training sessions provided by your school or college to learn how to use fire safety equipment properly.
Pay attention to instructions provided by teachers, staff, or emergency responders during training sessions and drills.
Step 4: Activate Fire Alarms
If you discover a fire or smoke, activate the nearest fire alarm immediately by pulling the alarm lever or pressing the alarm button.
This alerts others in the building and initiates the evacuation process.
Step 5: Evacuate First
Prioritize evacuation over attempting to fight the fire with fire extinguishers or other equipment.
Evacuate the building using the nearest exit and follow established evacuation routes to reach a safe assembly point outside.
Step 6: Use Fire Extinguishers if Safe to Do So:
If you have been trained and it is safe to do so, use a fire extinguisher to extinguish small fires. Remember the PASS technique
P: Pull the pin to unlock the extinguisher.
A: Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
S: Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
S: Sweep the nozzle from side to side while aiming at the base of the fire until it is extinguished.
Step 7: Know When to Retreat
If the fire is spreading rapidly, the smoke is thick, or if you are unsure about using a fire extinguisher, evacuate the area immediately and close doors behind you to contain the fire as much as possible.
Step 8: Do Not Re-enter the Building
Once outside, do not re-enter the building until it has been declared safe to do so by authorities.
Follow instructions from emergency responders and school staff.
Step 9: Report to Safety Personnel
If you have used fire safety equipment or witnessed a fire, report the details to safety personnel or firefighters when they arrive on the scene.
Provide information about the location, size, and nature of the fire, as well as any actions taken.
Step 10: Practice Regularly
Participate in fire drills and practice using fire safety equipment regularly to reinforce your skills and knowledge.
Familiarity and practice can help you respond confidently and effectively in case of a real emergency
